WORSHIP

Worship is dclaring something worthy, it is giving something or someone reverance, honor and service.  The bible tells us that we are all worshippers.  It is not a question of if we worship, but what we worship.  Paul tells the Roman church that God has revealed himself to us from the beggening of time and that we are without excuse.  God is worthy of our worship because he is the creator and sustainer of all life.

"For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse."

But even though God has revealed himself through creation, mankind has still chosen to turn their back on him.  They echanged their knowledge of God for created images and worshipped them instead.

"For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.  Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles."

So God allowed humans to pursue their sin.  They exchanged the truth for a lie and worshipped creation rather than the creator. This is the cheif sin of mankind, it is called idolatry.  It is worshipping something or someone other than God.  We see Adam and Eve exchange the truth for a lie in the garden.  Satan himself fell as God's chief angel because he wanted to be even with God.

"Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another.  They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen."

True worship is our reponse to the revelation of God declaring him alone worthy of our praise and adoration.  Paul says it is a lifestyle that is lived out as a response to God's mercy specificaly the atoning sacrafice of Jesus on the cross.  Worship can take many forms be it; adoration, praise, prayer, reverence, service, thanksgiving, confession, sacrafice, communion, singing, receiving sacraments.  Worship is God's extravagant love for us shown through creation and Christ dying for our sins and our extreme submission to God as a response living a life that glorifies God through our actions.
