THE BIBLE IS FULL OF SONGS
Songs come from God's people as a response to His revelation. When God rescues His people from Egypt and the hand of Pharoah Moses leads the people in a song of praise. Solomon wrote one of the worlds best poetic love songs teaching God's people about marriage and relationships. The book of Psalms is filled with songs to God most of which were written by King David. Jeremiah wrote songs of lament when Gods people were conquered and led back into captivity. Mary broke out in song at the news of the Messiah in her womb. The book of Revelation reveals the angels, elders, saints and heavenly creatures all singing and proclaiming God's praise before the throne.
The book of Psalms tells us:
"Oh sing to the Lord a new song;
sing to the Lord, all the earth.
Sing to the Lord, bless hi name;
tell of his salvation from day to day."
Psalm 96:1-2
The Bible contains over four hundered references to singing and fifty direct commands to sing. Music helps us remember words and proclaim who God is and what he has done. Gordon Fee said, "Show me a church's songs and I will show you their theology." We sing to "let the word of Christ dwell richly in us." Singing helps us connect to and express our emotions and feelings. We express our thankfullness, our joy, our pain, our sorrow, our gratitude, our confession, our repentance through song. The songs of God's people also unify us bringing us together to proclaim the same truths, to communicate the same thoughts and to worship together the lamb that was slain.
