HOLINESS
Holiness is the quality of God that makes Him completely different from His creation. God alone is holy. Jesus Christ is the perfect revelation of the holiness of God. Jesus shows us the image of the invisible God and how he desires us to live. God reveals himself holy in His redeeming acts. God shows himself to be both just and merciful. s God's people we are called to act justly, love mercy and walk humbly. Christian holiness is the sanctification of believers through Jesus Christ. God's desire is for us to be holy as he is holy. This involves being set apart for God's kingdom and purpose and different from what we see in the world and culture.
God directs us in His ways through the prompting of the Holy Spirit living in us and through his scripture. Holiness is a movement toward being blameless, spotless, cleansed and acceptable to God. Holiness involves an element of discipline because we are a sinful people prone to build our own kingdom through selfishness. Holiness involves dying to our sinful nature and desires and seeking to be renewed in the spirit and becoming a new creation in Christ.
Leviticus 20:26
"You shall be holy to me, for I the Lord am holy and have separated you from the peoples, that you should be mine."
Hebrews 12:10-11
"For they disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness. For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it."
1 Thessalonians 3:11-13
"Now may our God and Father himself, and our Lord Jesus, direct our way to you, and may the Lord make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all, as we do for you, so that he may establish your hearts blameless in holiness before our God and Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints."
Ephesians 4:22-24
"Put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.
"HOLY HOLY HOLY"
Reginald Heber
Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
Early in the morning our song shall rise to thee;
holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty,
God in three persons, blessed Trinity!
Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore thee,
casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea;
cherubim and seraphim falling down before thee,
who wert and art and evermore shalt be.
Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide thee,
though the eye made blind by sin thy glory may not see,
only thou art holy; there is none beside thee,
perfect in power, in love, and purity.
Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty!
All thy works shall praise thy name, in earth and sky and sea;
holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty,
God in three persons, blessed Trinity!
