Every musician should have a basic understanding of music theory and how to play their instrument.  We should be life long learners of our instruments always looking for ways to further develop our craft.  Below are some simple begginer tutorials to help you along with that process.  I would incourage you to explore and learn about multiple instruments as well.  Being able to understand multiple instruments helps you further your knowledge in theory and communicate with other players in the band.

THEORY CHORDS

Understanding Chords

One of the first steps to understanding theory especially for guitar and piano is to understand what chords are.

Chords are simply: a grouping of  notes played together to create a sound.

For starters we will look at two types of chords Major and Minor.  Major is typically defined as having a happy sound while minor is talked about as having a sad sound.

Major Chord: 1st, 3rd and 5th notes in the scale are played

Minor Chord: 1st, flat 3rd and 5th notes in the scale are played

You should learn how to play the following major and minor chords on your instrument to begin.
