TRINITY
The word Trinity reffers to the fact that God reveals himself as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The Trinity is God who reveals himself as three Persons. The word itself does not appear in the Bible but the doctrine of the Trinity is revealed throughout scripture. The concept of three in oneness is often hard to conceive of and has been dificult for Christians to fully understand.
We find as early as the book of Genesis God revealed as 3 in one. In Genesis 1 the Father speaks words (Jesus) to bring creation into existance through the power of the Holy Spirit (the breathe of life). Later, we hear God speak saying "Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness". We also see a confirmation of God as three in one in Jesus baptism. God affirms Jesus as His son and the Holy Spirit decends in the form of a dove to rest on him.
God is affirmed as three but also as one as we see in Deuteronomy 6:4
"Hear, O Israel: the LORD our God, the LORD is one."
When Jesus institutes the Great Commision to make disciples he says:
"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit" (Mathew 28:19-20)
When Jesus is getting ready to go to the cross he promises the sending of the Holy Spirit:
"“If you love me, keep my commands. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you." (John 14:15-17)
The apostle Paul uses trinitarian language in his letters to the early churches:
"May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all."
(2 Corinthians 13:14)
Paul tells the Ephesian church:
"He (Jesus) came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near. 18 For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit." (Ephesians 2:17-18)
The author of the book of Hebrews speaking of Christ's atonement for our sins says:
"How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God!" (Hebrews 9:14)
We also find trinitarian language in the book of John:
"For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one." (1 John 5:7-8)
